Education, essentially, is about the pursuit of knowledge. Media scholarship is a particularly unique form of knowledge pursuit and knowledge propagation. Education and media are also closely linked as fields of ideas and ideologies – concepts and perspectives that are created and propagated through the instrumentation of journalism as well as education.

Ikiebe believes African teachers of journalism must re-evaluate their epistemological origins and confront wholesale adoption of values that are not compatible with their cultural origins. Teaching mathematics and physics is very different from teaching history or journalism, or even economics, for that matter. It is time to deconstruct our pedagogical paradigm and epistemological worldview, which are alien to the African view of the world.
