I believe it is time to deconstruct current pedagogical paradigms and epistemological worldviews, which are alien to the African view of the world.

Richard Ikiebe is an adjunct faculty, at the School of Media and Communication, SMC, of the Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, Nigeria, where he was full-time faculty and Director of the Centre for Leadership in Journalism (CLeJ) until 2021. He teaches graduate and executive courses in Journalism, Journalism History, and Media Leadership. In 2012/13, Ikiebe served as a member of the Global Communication Certification Council of the International Association of Business Communicators IABC, to prepare a syllabus and implement a certification scheme to ISO standard for the marketing communication profession.

Teacher

Education, essentially, is about the pursuit of knowledge. Media scholarship is a particularly unique form of knowledge pursuit and knowledge propagation. Education and media are also closely linked as fields of ideas and ideologies – concepts and perspectives that are created and propagated through the instrumentation of journalism as well as education.

Ikiebe believes African teachers of journalism must re-evaluate their epistemological origins and confront the wholesale adoption of values that are not compatible with their cultural origins. Teaching mathematics and physics is very different from teaching history or journalism, or even economics, for that matter.

Coach

The world of coaching becoming quite so varied and diverse; my coaching area of expertise is in leadership and governance because the quality of everything an executive does depends on the quality of the thinking they do first.

As a Barefoot trained coach in an ICF-accredited PG Certificate in Business & Personal Coaching programme, I have had the privilege of working with top executives in the business community mostly on a one-on-one basis.

Peace Activist

In his role as a peacebuilder and activist, pastor and faith-based organiser, Ikiebe in the last several years, helped to establish a number of indigenous language churches to cater for internal migrants from the north into the metropolis of Lagos.  Part of the objectives was to help the young and vulnerable internal migrants find a productive life in their new abode. The project has produced quite a few university and other tertiary institution graduates, since its inception, about ten years ago. Ikiebe has also served as a national coordinator for a non-denominational, faith-based coalition of pastors – Church for Change.  The group works to engage politicians and church leaders on the platforms of peace, ethnic reconciliation, and ethical politics.
